Adam Whitaker. The blue jay was not planned.

Pufferfish Media is a small digital marketing agency based in East New Market, Maryland, working with local businesses across the Eastern Shore and the wider Delmarva Peninsula. Roofers and landscapers, tax preparers and storage yards, energy contractors and clinics. The common thread is not an industry. It is a business that gets most of its work from people nearby who searched for it, and an owner who does not have time to also become an SEO.

Who runs it

Adam Whitaker owns and runs Pufferfish Media, and works as the local SEO expert and consultant on every engagement here rather than handing it to somebody else. He also owns two other businesses, which is the reason this one exists. Precision Exteriors is a roofing and exteriors company that holds Owens Corning Platinum Preferred status. Yard Works Plus is a dumpster rental business he started from nothing.

When Precision Exteriors needed to be found online, Adam did what most owners do and looked at agencies. What came back was expensive, slow and heavy on reporting that never quite connected to booked jobs. So he learned the work instead. He wrote and structured the whole Precision Exteriors site — 134 URLs as of 16 August 2026, including 69 service pages and 26 location and service-area pages — implemented schema markup across every one of them, and optimized Google Business Profiles across multiple markets. When Yard Works Plus launched with no website, no profile and no reviews, he built the whole footprint from scratch: 86 URLs, 20 location pages, published pricing rather than a quote form, and a Google Business Profile from zero.

Both of those are still live, still ranking, and still his own money on the line. That is the part that matters. Nothing on this site is a tactic Adam read about. It is a system that was tested on businesses he could not afford to get wrong, then offered to other owners who wanted the same thing.

Why "Pufferfish"?

The name Pufferfish Media comes from a nickname. Adam Whitaker and his wife Taylor have called each other Puff for years. It stuck when the business was named, and it fits: a pufferfish is small, local, and more formidable than it looks. Taylor and their son are the reason the business exists.

Who we work with

Home service contractors are where the deepest proof is, and that work still informs how everything here is built. But the approach is not contractor-specific, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest to the businesses we actually serve. Current work spans exterior contracting, dumpster and portable storage rental, energy services, and tax and financial services. What those have in common is a defined service area, a phone that needs to ring, and a buyer who compares two or three options before calling.

If your customers find you by searching for what you do near where they live, the playbook applies. If you sell nationally to people who have never heard of your town, it probably does not, and we will tell you that on the first call rather than three months into an invoice.

How the work runs

This is a small operation on purpose. You talk to the person doing the work, not an account manager relaying messages to a production team you never meet. That constrains how many businesses we can take on at once, and it is the reason we would rather turn down a fit that is wrong than stack another logo on a page.

Engagements are month to month. There is no annual lock-in, no setup fee and no penalty for leaving. Accounts are set up in your name with you as the owner, which means your Google Business Profile, your Google Ads account, your Analytics property and your domain stay yours whatever happens between us. If we stop working together, our access is removed and everything stays exactly where it is.

Reporting is monthly and short. Rankings that moved, calls and forms that came in, what was published, and what is next. Not a thirty page PDF designed to look like effort.

Why AI search is the focus

A growing share of buyers now start with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or a Google AI Overview rather than a list of blue links. Those systems do not show ten results. They name two or three businesses and the buyer calls one of them. Getting named requires a different kind of work than classic SEO: a clean entity across every profile and directory, structured data a model can parse, and content written to be quoted rather than to hit a word count.

Very few agencies on the Eastern Shore are doing this yet, which is exactly why it is worth doing now. The businesses that establish themselves as the cited answer in a market will be difficult to displace later.

What we will not do

We will not guarantee a ranking, because nobody controls Google or the models behind the answer engines. We will not lock you into a twelve month agreement to buy time. We will not hold your accounts hostage. And we will not quote a number on a first call before looking at what you actually have, because the honest answer sometimes is that you need one $750 service and not a $4,000 package.

If that sounds like the way you would rather work, call (443) 521-3491 or email adam@pufferfishmedia.biz. The first conversation is fifteen minutes and costs nothing.

How we work

Owner-operated, not outsourced
The person you talk to is the person doing the work. Nothing is handed to a subcontracted content mill or an offshore link farm. That limits how many clients we can carry, which is a feature rather than a problem.
You own everything
Your website, your content, your domain, your Google Business Profile, your Google Ads account and your Analytics data are all set up in your name with you as owner. We hold delegated access only, and it is removed the day an engagement ends.
Month to month, always
No annual contracts, no setup fees, no cancellation penalty. If the work is not earning its fee, you should be able to leave without arguing with a lawyer about it. That keeps the pressure where it belongs.
Plain numbers, including the bad ones
Monthly reporting shows what moved, what did not, and what is planned next. When a result goes backwards we say so and explain what we are changing, because a report that only ever contains good news is not a report.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Pufferfish Media?
Pufferfish Media is a digital marketing agency in East New Market, Maryland, owned and run by Adam Whitaker. It works with local businesses across the Eastern Shore and the Delmarva Peninsula on local SEO, AI search visibility, websites, Google Ads and reputation management.
Why is it called Pufferfish Media?
Adam Whitaker and his wife Taylor have called each other Puff for years, and that nickname became the name Pufferfish Media. A pufferfish is small, local, and more formidable than it looks, which fits the business. Taylor and their son are the reason Pufferfish Media exists.
Do you only work with contractors?
No. The deepest proof is in home services, because the founder owns a roofing company and a dumpster rental company and built both online presences himself. But current work also covers energy services, tax and financial services, and portable storage. If your customers find you by searching locally for what you do, the approach fits.
How big is the team?
It is a small, owner-operated agency. That is deliberate. You deal directly with the person doing the work rather than an account manager, and the trade-off is that we take on a limited number of clients at a time.
Where do you work?
Primarily the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the wider Delmarva Peninsula, including Dorchester, Wicomico, Talbot, Caroline and Queen Anne counties. Remote work outside that area is possible for the right fit, though local knowledge is genuinely part of the value on map pack and service-area work.
What makes your approach different from other agencies?
Two things. First, the systems were built and proven on the founder’s own businesses before they were ever sold to anyone. Second, AI search optimization is treated as a core service rather than an add-on, because a real share of local buying decisions now starts inside an AI answer instead of a search results page.
